It just dawned on me one day that heartburn was not just an
occasional problem - it was getting serious and very frequent. So, as I was
conditioned to do, I ran to see the doctor.
He listened to my complaint. Peered down my throat.
Sent me for xrays. Finally, he told me I had an ulcer that there was no cure
for other than surgery. Prescribed a little red pill (I forget what it was
called) to take - probably for ever more.
Over time, my condition got worse and I progressed to the drug
Tagamet which at that time was by prescription only. After a couple of years
on that, I was in a very sorry state. I was gaining weight, losing muscle. I
needed at least two rolls of Rolaids to get through a day. A white grit would
accumulate in my bladder which was very painful to excrete. My quality of
life stunk!
I don't need to go on and on about how bad it can be. You know...
A light at the end of the tunnel.
One day, a little "health" book I found in a building being demolished
caught my eye. It was a book outlining the studies at a university in Oregon of
the Acid / Alkaline forming qualities of various foods. Keep in mind that this
was more than 20 years ago - and the book was old then.
With the meager bit of knowledge I had gained from that book, I
started treating myself. Not with drugs, but with food. SUCCESS! Sort of. Still
fixated on Stomach Acid, I found I was able to control the heartburn fairly
well and never use antacids. Reflux though, that was another problem.
It didn't go away. In fact, it kept getting worse. So there I was,
mostly heartburn free. My esophagus was healing well, but reflux was setting out
to kill me. I would wake up in the middle of the night, choking to death. The
stuff would seep over my larynx and into my lungs. You may not have
progressed that far yet, but if you do, you'll find out just how frightening
it can be. It scared me. Yeah!
No amount of antacids will prevent reflux at night. The only way I
knew of at that time was to Not Eat for 5 hours before bed time. Difficult, but
safe. I would sleep propped up on several pillows as well.
Finally! The solution.
All this time, I was researching the entire subject. I would spend
days at the library. Then, with the progression of the internet, the task
became much easier. I have NEVER found a single document that points directly
to the cause of Reflux. I HAVE formed a clear picture in my mind though, based
on the knowledge I have gained from years of study, of exactly how the condition
progresses, how it causes reflux and how to fix it.
The Facts...
Stomach acid has nothing to do with reflux!
However, your Lifestyle which has
brought on the problem with stomach acid AND your efforts to control
stomach acid are entirely responsible for the condition that causes reflux.
